We are seeking Postdoctoral Research Associates to join our newly launched Artificial Intelligence (AI) Enabled Additive Manufacturing (AM) Program. In this role, you will support the objectives of the program by demonstrating leadership in one or more of the cross disciplinary research areas described.

You will be matched with a Carnegie Mellon faculty mentor in an appropriate area of research and will reside in the faculty advisor’s home department.
This is a one year, fixed term position with the possibility of extension based upon the continued availability of funding, annual review and consideration. Multiple positions are available.

About the AI Enabled AM Program: CMU’s AI Enabled AM Program is an interdisciplinary initiative to accelerate the development of expeditionary manufacturing capability for the US Army. The five-year program will address several significant technology capability gaps and fundamental research requirements from 2020-2025 that are required to enable expeditionary manufacturing. This research program is structured so that research can be conducted with goals and objectives for each core research area. However, our overall objective is not limited to parallel contributions in these individual research areas. Instead, we aim to go much further by taking a comprehensive research approach to develop and demonstrate in a resource-constrained environment a complete expeditionary manufacturing system maximizing AM+AI, including:

  1. Advanced analysis and characterization of AM powders and their potential impact on part design(s), addressed in the Pre-Processing research area;
  2. Integration of Computer Vision with process modeling of the AM melt pool and build layers to enable real-time optimization, addressed in the In-Situ Processing (Processing & Optimization) research area;
  3. Sensing and correlating microstructures to critical physical and performance characteristics of the manufactured part, addressed in the Post-Processing research area;
  4. Enabling AI data fusion to provide real-time qualification and certification of AM parts, with the requisite cyber security and human-machine teaming to support operation in a resource-constrained environment.

The ultimate goal for maximizing AM+AI for Army expeditionary manufacturing applications is to achieve fully automated sensing and optimization of the AM process, and to enable real-time qualification and certification of mission-critical AM parts and components manufactured at the point of need.

Primary Responsibilities include:

  • Research and project management including planning, scheduling and conducting research in one or more of the program research areas
  • Participating in regular meetings with project team members to support implementation progress and results; maintaining effective project team communications including calendaring, and meeting notes with partner sites Producing scholarly articles and reports for publication resulting from research; support the delivery of technical reports and research reviews with ARL, advisors, and project team members
  • Presenting research results with project team members to ARL, advisors, and professional audiences at annual demonstrations, professional and academic conferences
  • Guiding and mentoring student research assistants as applicable
  • Collaborating on new research projects and grant writing activities

Qualifications: Completion of PhD or ScD prior to start date; No more than two years past the date of the doctoral degree at the time of appointment
