Description of Position: CU Boulder's PSAAP Multidisciplinary Simulation Center for Micromorphic Multiphysics Porous and Particulate Materials Simulations Within Exascale Computing Workflows has an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct extreme-scale simulations at the particle length-scale for fracture and fragmentation of bonded particulate materials with experimental validation and coordination with micromorphic multiscale models. Successful applicants will have strong written and verbal communication skills, and interest in working with an interdisciplinary team to apply the following to real-world problems:

  • Collaborative software development and devops (Git, continuous integration, etc.);
  • Finite element, discrete element, and material-point discretizations;
  • Computational mechanics/inelasticity; and-Scalable data-intensive computing.

Who We Are: The PSAAP Center at CU Boulder is a Multidisciplinary Simulation Center (MSC) funded by DOE NNSA Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) focused on simulating with quantified uncertainty, from pore-particle-to-continuum-scales, a class of problems involving granular flows, large deformations, and fracture/fragmentation of unbonded and bonded particulate materials. The overarching problem is the processing and thermo-mechanical behavior of compressed virgin and recycled mock high explosive (HE) material subjected to quasi-static and high-strain-rates, confined and unconfined compression, in-situ quasi-static X-ray computed tomography, and dynamic (impact) experiments with ultrafast synchrotron X-ray imaging at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be: Simulate the thermo-mechanical behavior of bonded particulate materials like mock HE resolving the particle-scale-physics of particle-particle and particle-binder interactions with emphasis on processing and extreme loadings leading to fracture and fragmentation. Numerical methods used include the Material Point Method (MPM), Discrete Element Method (DEM), Finite Element Method (FEM), Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), and the like, and their couplings for extreme-scale (CPU-GPU) computing. The postdoctoral researcher will work with other Center Team members to upscale the particle-scale response to the macroscale through a statistical micromorphic continuum field theory framework, with Machine Learning (ML) to investigate internal state variable evolution equation forms, calibration and validation against experimental data, and verification of the numerical methods. The postdoc will develop collaborative software with devops (Git, continuous integration, etc.), write peer-reviewed journal articles and communicate results at conferences, along with interact with technical staff at LANL, LLNL, and SNL.

The position can start immediately and is remote-friendly, especially during the pandemic. The position can last up to 3 years. US citizenship is required in order to work closely with NNSA lab technical staff.

What We Can Offer: The salary for this position is $60,000 annually.
